Book Week

For Book Week we gathered as a class to create a poster to hang in the library. First we got a large cardboard from Mrs Golder to put our interesting information about our Author we chose. Our Author that Room 12 chose was Elisabetta Dami and she writes Geronimo Stilton chapter books. We chose her because we like to read her books. We worked on it for about 2 weeks because we had a lot of information to put on it and pictures were drawn by students so that took a while.

Syndicate Assembly

Yesterday 16 November was Syndicate Assembly. It was a short Assembly because we had a whole School Assembly. We practiced a song for prize giving and it is a Tongan and Samoan version of the song, 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'.  We sang beautifully together with the song and it sounded amazing.

Tyrone Toka

Weeks Ago we had a special assembly, a boy sang a song to Ruapotaka School in the Multi-Purpose Room. We sat and waited till he sang. He brought his own instrument which was a ukulele. He played it very slowly and it was awesome. He had a talented voice and he performed on Homai Te Pakipaki. We really enjoyed listening to him sing.

They read some of their work they done in class and showed us a picture that they drew in their class. We then sang some songs based on the  Rugby World Cup 2015. Certificates were handed out to the students who have been excellent in class and out at all times. After the Assembly finished we headed back to our classes.

Rewriting a text using a different language style

Yesterday, the Bananas' group were with Mrs Golder on the mat and we we were given a task to do. The task was to rewrite a page from the Journal and the book we were reading: 'Why do I blush?' Together as a group we used words from the text to make up a narrative. We turned the language of an information report to the language of a narrative because we were learning to analyse the the different types of language features used in a text.
This is our rewrite:
Princess Ofa commented, “These reactions are signs your body is getting ready to …”Queen Melelose added quickly, “either fight or run away from a situation.”Prince Raniera was listening in and advised, “This is how our ancestors often reacted a long time ago.”Kolotina, the butler exclaimed, “ That’s true, your Majesty, for example when they came face to face with a large woolly mammoth!” Mikayla, the servant walked in with a bucket of ice and agreed, “this can help you cool down from your fight or flight reaction.”Prince Raniera interrupted the conversation and explained, “Your blood carries your body’s extra heat into tiny vessels called capillaries.”While the maid was cleaning she overheard the conversation in the royal room and wanted to join in this academic discussion. She mumbled shyly, “Because blood is red and the capillaries in your face are very near the surface of your skin, this heat-release this heat makes your face appear red, too.” The royal family were in shock of her knowledge and intelligence and were absolutely speechless.

Senior Cross Country

Students jogging, walking, talking and dawdling like a bunch of jungle animals.

Everyday we have cross-country and we have to run three whole laps. There were year fours running with the year eights. Some students like the year fours ran only two times around the block but the year eights and sevens had to run three compulsory laps.

When the bell rang we first had to get into our class lines. As we stood we had to wait for the teachers instructions to start running. We ran up the hill and got to the gate near the crossing where Mrs Golder was standing. Down the hill we ran very exhaustedly. Some people were jogging and sprinting to finish one lap.

Later,  when we past Mr Reid we headed towards Mrs Buchanan’s way. While we were running up the hill there were more than one person sauntering through one lap. Then we ran up towards Miss Ginders and she told us to “Keep running it’s only one or two more laps left” so we ran and walked through to the finish line. At last we came to the end of the last lap we were as tired as! I took a sip of water, the coldness of the water went dripping down my sleeves.

We practised and practised and at the end of the day we were BETTER THAN BEFORE!

Waste Performance

On Tuesday 18th of May, Ruapotaka School had a ‘Waste Performance’ in the multi purpose room. It showed which bin we put our rubbish in and showed us how not to waste food. This shows that we just put our rubbish in the wrong bin so you leave the poor hungry worms starve. The performers' names were Matt and Andy. They were as funny as. The Performance was very awesome and it was very interesting. It taught us to put the right thing in the right rubbish bin.

Asthma Show

Last week on Friday we had a special show to watch in the multipurpose room. The special show was based on Asthma. We sat down and we saw a man with a flash blue suit sitting on the chair. The man's name was Chris from the song for Crossing The Road. Chris sang to the audience and he danced to the song and he chose some people from the audience to go up and hold his puppets. We sometimes had to repeat what he said when he called in his pet fish Sailor. We had an awesome time watching the Asthma Show.

Origami

Every Friday we make origami with colored paper as part of Visual Arts. We made random things with our colored paper that we received and we only managed to make farm and zoo animals. At the moment we are trying to make different things from animals. We enjoyed making different kinds of origami.

Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures.

Duffy Assembly

Today we had a Duffy Assembly where a 25 year old man called Myron Simpson came to talk about reading and his career and his future. He brought some of his equipment to show that he is a champion at bicycling. He showed us his expensive bicycle, shoes, helmet that his dad painted and his skin suit that can make him speed fast through the air. Some students from the crowd got chosen to wear his stuff. After that, Sini said a huge 'thank you' to Myron for coming and sharing his career with us and how great reading is. Myron Simpson has a muesli bar named after him, but it is not out in the markets.

Daffodils

On Friday 31st of August it was Daffodil Day and each class had to make Daffodils. We made Daffodils and a beautiful red vase to put our lovely Daffodils in it. I think our class had the best daffodils in the whole school. After assembly we came back to class and took lovely photos with our handmade daffodils. We had a lovely and happy afternoon on Friday.

P.E At St Kents

It was a lovely Friday morning, Ruapotaka senior syndicate went to St Kents for P.E and some of us came early, then Mrs Golder chose Sini, Miria, Cypress and I to go in the van to St Kents. When we arrived at St Kents we hopped off the van with glee and walked as proud as we could to the sport centre. When we got there the St Kents sports teacher put us in to two groups and then we played a bit of basketball. A while later, the other classes from Ruapotaka School came and sadly we had to stop our game with the coach.

Then we were put in to our groups by Miss Ginders and I was in group two with Mrs Golder but she left us and went and took photos of the wrong group. She realized that she was taking photos of a different group so she went finding her group. She finally found her group and started taking photos. Our sports teacher was a boy and he taught us some simple and easy drills to do and to warm us up before moving on to the next step.

After that, our tutor said that we could have a touch game against the other team so he took us to the other field then we played against each other. It was hard to run as fast as a cheetah to get a try because they had more people than us but the only good thing is we got a try. ‘’Yay we tried to get a score.’’ Both team had the same score so there was no group that won or lost.

Soon we packed up and went as a group back into the sports centre and waited for the other groups to arrive so we can head back to school.

While we were waiting, we watched and laughed at a boy run and dunk the ball into the basketball hoop. It was awesome. We all had joyful time there. We all stood up and went out the St Kents door and back on the bus. The others went except for the people who got chosen to go in the van. While we were on our way to school we were listening to some music.

An Accident

Thinking back in the past was an accident that happened when I was five years of age.
It was a very hot and sunny day, when my accident happened. I was riding on my scooter gradually outside my backyard and then out of nowhere a rock came rolling near the wheels of my scooter. I got very scared and I flew off my scooter. The rock was like a magnet leaving trails of rocks behind the other. As I was riding there was a bumpy part of the footpath that made me wiggle around on my scooter which made me fly swiftly.
Later on, I had a rest on the doorstep with my scooter. Then I got up with a lot of energy, back to work with my scooter. Off I went exploring my backyard, when a humongous rock hit the wheel of my scooter and then I went flying off my scooter into the bush. A while later when I got up from the bush my body was numb. I rushed into my house with tears running down my eyes. Then I got inside and I saw in between my toes I was bleeding like a volcano erupting.
When I noticed I had a cut in between my toes I was in shock. I thought my toes were about to tear apart. I screamed out loud but I couldn't utter a sound. After that I heard a voice coming near me I turned around it was my mum. I told her all about what happened to my toes.
She straight away took me to the doctors because she thought it was very bad. As I sat in the doctors, my name was called to go and see the doctor. I entered the room and told the doctor  about my adventure in my backyard after I had my accident. My toes wsa cleaned and bandaged but when they were cleaning in between my toes it slowly started to sting like my veins were getting  cut in pieces.
Finally, they put a bandage around my toes. I respectfully said a huge “Thank you” to the doctor for helping me. When they finished putting the bandage around my toes we left the doctors and headed back home.
So if you are riding your scooter remember to check that your path is clear before you fall over and hurt yourself.

Preventing Electrical Injuries

Injuries through electrical appliances can be very bad and hurtful for people. Being careless can cause pain but you can get better by going to the doctor and taking fluids or medicine or even putting cream on your scars or burns to help stop or heal the pain. Electrical Injuries can cause young and old people to die.

Electrical appliances are to be supervised by adults and elders. Children can get burnt by playing with electrical cords  that are plugged into a socket. To keep children away from sockets you can use plastic socket covers. These can help the children to stay away from sockets. Appliance cords need to be kept away in a safe place where children cannot reach it.

The consequence of playing with electrical appliances can leave your body with scars, burns, disability, paralysis, amputation and it can damage the human body, but especially kill you.

You can stop children and adults by getting electrocuted by repairing or replacing damaged cords or plugs, having more adult supervision, maybe putting up some warnings signs around schools and homes. High voltage equipment should be kept very high away from trees and house tops.

Ways to Prevent Illness.

An illness is a sickness that affects our bodies and our minds. Not washing your hands, coughing without blocking your mouth, sharing lunch with others, using your clothes to wipe your nose and sneezing around people are ways you can become ill. Spreading germs is one of the reason people get sick. Some children and parents can get sick from the following.
Names of common illness:

  • Chicken pox
  • Cold
  • Flu
  • Rheumatic Fever
  • Meningeal
  • Measles

These common illnesses can be spread to others if they are not treated.  A whole town of people would fall ill. Many other illnesses can cause people to lose their lives.

To prevent these illnesses you could try and exercise everyday, clean your hands, sleeping early, going to bed early, avoid watching too much T.V. Instead of drinking sugar filled drinks, drink a lot of water, take your medicines that are given to you by the doctor, and also visit the doctor once you realize that you are sick.

Gallipoli Soldier
25th April 1915
Dear Friends,

On the twenty fifth of April 1915 we arrived at Gallipoli. When we landed at Gallipoli we heard gunshots,  bombs firing and tanks crashing. It was pitch black we couldn’t see a thing until we saw a light shine far in the distance. It was a long walk until we got to the light. When we got to the light we saw people lying on the floor with blood all over them. ‘’We were too late." said Sam and Tom.

The next day, we woke up and ate a little snack to fill our hungry stomachs before we got ready to go. We finished our snacks and headed out the trench with shivering lips. It was cold that morning with bombs lit up ready to go, gunshots in the air and people running with fear and no weapons.  It was a hard mission for me and my mates, fighting against others but we struggled on without our weapons.

It was getting late that night so we headed back to our tent to have a rest for the next day. We laid our heads on our pillows with pain. As we slept, we dreamt about getting shot by the other soldiers. When we woke up the next morning, we travelled our way out the trench to find some weapons for our next battle in the land of  gunshots. On our way to find weapons we found a soldier's dead body, we dumped it ext to a palm tree and kept on searching for hidden weapons.

Later on that day, it was time for battle and we headed in the direction of the gunshots and bombs. The gunshots and bombs were getting louder and louder but then it disappeared away. We headed the other direction and there was a gunshot right at the back of us, then when we turned around only two survived. Tom died of gunshot. After that, Sam and I screamed as hard as we could because we were scared to death. A little while later we were looking around for some help and we found a red cross drawn on the branch of a tree and it showed us the way of living your lives.
soldiers.jpgFinally, we find our way to a safe and happy place for us two to stay. Me and Sam are proud that we survived throughout the battle while the other people were dying. ‘’At last the battle was over it was time to go home.’’

Everyday Theatre

Dear Diary,

Today has been a struggling day for me because of dad. Dad can be annoying at times. I hope this can help me tear all the problems and the bad things out of me. I am angry about how my parents argue loudly with each other and how they treat me like rubbish. I would love this issue to stop before it gets worse, so I can have a wonderful future.
Since Becca and Brian moved in, everything changed and life changed. I hated it when Becca and Brian moved in because I found out that my mum Mariah gave my bedroom to Becca to sleep in.
The only thing I like about Becca is that she does my homework for me when it’s hard.
Please,  diary can you help me stop my parents from arguing and get on with their lives.
I truly want to stay where we are but if things don’t come out right, our family will be mucked up.
I wish my family can learn how to respect each other in a good way and have faith and hope in themselves.
